What China’s First Domestic Immersion DUV Machines Really Mean for ASML

A Dutch friend sent me the news and asked a very direct question: “China has started producing its own immersion DUV lithography machines. Should ASML be worried?” My answer is: not immediately — but the strategic landscape has changed. China has reportedly begun limited production of domestically developed immersion deep-ultraviolet lithography systems. Around five machines are targeted for 2026 and roughly 20 for 2027, with initial deliveries expected to Chinese chipmakers including SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor and CXMT. For comparison, ASML has stated that its 2026 immersion DUV capacity is approximately 130 systems. This is not technological parity. It is the beginning of an alternative. What This Reveals About Industrial Strategy • A backup can matter before it becomes competitive. The Chinese systems still require further testing and reportedly remain behind ASML in performance and reliability. But their first strategic function is not necessarily to outperform ASML. It is to keep production and learning moving if access to foreign equipment or servicing becomes more restricted. • The real milestone is deployment, not the prototype. Building a machine is one challenge. Operating it across thousands of wafer runs with acceptable overlay, yield, throughput and reliability is another. Customer qualification will determine whether these systems become industrial tools rather than political symbols. • Export controls can delay capability while accelerating substitution. Restrictions increase cost and slow development. At the same time, they create a strong incentive for governments, manufacturers and suppliers to coordinate around domestic alternatives. That does not mean controls have failed. It means their long-term effects are more complex than simply removing access to one product. What It Means for ASML ASML retains decisive advantages in advanced DUV, EUV, system reliability, service infrastructure and accumulated manufacturing knowledge. The company also continues to benefit from strong global demand for advanced logic and memory equipment. Its technological lead is not erased by a production target of five domestic Chinese machines. However, the long-term risk is not that ASML loses the global market overnight. It is that a dual-track market gradually emerges: — China becomes increasingly self-sufficient in mature-node and selected advanced-DUV applications. — The rest of the leading-edge market continues to depend on ASML’s EUV and next-generation platforms.
